MONTREALINDIGENOUS ARTISTSCRITICAL WRITING

Two to six months of paid training in critical writing for an Indigenous artist or cultural worker, with publication guaranteed at the end.

Conseil des arts de Montréal
DEADLINE14 OCTOBER 2026, 17 H
WORTHUp to $10,000 to the host organisation

Criticism is one of the few parts of the arts sector with almost no Indigenous voices in it, and this programme is CAM's attempt at the supply side. Up to $10,000 goes to a Montreal organisation to train one Indigenous artist or cultural worker in critical writing.

This is the one CAM programme on this month's list where a circus or dance creation company cannot apply. Organisations whose main mandate is research, creation or production are explicitly excluded. Hosting is for museums, magazines, diffusers, artist centres, galleries, festivals and service organisations.

WHAT IT IS

The host receives up to $10,000, and the budget has to include a fee for the person in residence, set by the highest standards in the cultural sector. The residency runs two to six months depending on what the resident needs.

The host pairs the resident with a person or an editorial or curatorial team able to support their professional development, and commits to publishing one or more of their critical texts.

CAM's Indigenous arts committee is a partner in the programme rather than only a funder, and the host has to work with it and with the Indigenous arts cultural adviser over the long term.

WHO CAN APPLY
  • ·THE APPLICANT IS AN ORGANISATION, and unlike the other CAM programmes here a creation or production company is NOT eligible. The exclusion is explicit: organisations whose main mandate is research, creation or production cannot file.
  • ·Eligible hosts are museums, service organisations and disciplinary associations, and arts organisations whose mandate is publishing a cultural periodical, specialised or multidisciplinary diffusion including artist centres and galleries, or running an event or festival.
  • ·The organisation has to be a non-profit corporation or a non-profit cooperative that pays no dividend, with its head office on the island of Montreal, and a board that is majority Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It can already receive CAM funding or be applying for the first time.
  • ·Also not eligible: individual artists, unincorporated artist collectives, collectives incorporated as a company or partnership, general partnerships, teaching and training organisations, public and parapublic bodies, organisations working exclusively in variety and comedy, and those working exclusively in cultural mediation.
  • ·The person in residence must be an Indigenous artist or an Indigenous cultural worker.
  • ·The selected person has to create an ORORA profile, complete the self-identification tab and file the final report.
  • ·A residency that finishes before CAM answers is not eligible.
  • ·Circus is on the eligible discipline list, with street arts, digital arts, film and video, dance, literature, music, theatre, visual arts, non-disciplinary practices and the multidisciplinary sector.
HOW & WHEN TO APPLY
01
Decide which side of this you are on
If you write and you are looking for a first real editorial context, your move is to approach a magazine, a festival or an artist centre in Montreal. If you run one of those, this is $10,000 to train someone you would not otherwise be able to pay.
02
Sort out who will edit
CAM asks the host to pair the resident with a person or team capable of supporting their development, and to commit to publishing. Both need to be real before you file.
03
File on ORORA by 14 October 2026, 17 h
The date of your own call for applications has to be approved by CAM, and the Indigenous arts committee keeps a say over the person selected.
