A note from Niko

Why Circus Box exists

Every part of Circus Box started the same way: something this community needed didn't exist, so I started making it.

First it was video. Musicians have Tiny Desk and COLORS. Circus had nothing like it, so I started filming long interviews with artists.

Then came the casting calls. The big companies are easy to find. A small company in Europe that could be perfect for you posts on its own Instagram, and if you don't already know them, you'll never see it. Circus Box puts those calls in one place.

Some platforms charge artists to see casting calls. I get why: artists looking for work are the easiest people to make money from. That's not what Circus Box is for. I want it to give this industry a lot more than access to information.

There's no single place to check when you need something from this industry. I want Circus Box to be that place. Which company is looking for a hand-to-hand base, or a dancer for its next tour. Which grants fund circus and dance together. What's new with the companies you've worked for.

Where to follow

Casting calls and news live here, and the newsletter sends them to your inbox. Most of the community follows along on Instagram. On YouTube, we publish long-form interviews with artists and people behind the scenes.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Are casting calls really free?

Yes, and they'll stay free. Reading a casting call costs nothing, on the website, in the newsletter or on Instagram.

Running Circus Box does cost money, so some things may be paid one day. Casting calls won't be one of them. If you're looking for work, you shouldn't have to pay to find it.

Who is Circus Box for?

If you make shows for a living, on stage or behind it, Circus Box is for you. It started in the circus community, because that's my world, and it's slowly opening up to the rest of the performing arts. Dance casting calls are already part of it.

How can I support Circus Box?

The free ways count: follow on Instagram, subscribe on YouTube, share a post or a video. Views are what make YouTube pay, and a bigger audience is what brings partners.

I keep as much of Circus Box free as I can, because I don't want to ask for money from people who don't have any to spare.

What are the interviews about?

The things people in this job talk about after the show and rarely say on camera. How little people outside understand the work. Why artists are the first ones cut when the money gets tight.

If people still picture lions and clown wigs when we say circus, part of that is on us. Almost nobody in contemporary circus is out there explaining what we do. The interviews do.

Can I send you a casting call?

Yes. Send the link or the full details to the address just below.
