CANADAGRANTALL DISCIPLINESCLOSES 21 OCTOBER
MONTREALPUBLIC ART

Up to $75,000 to turn the facade of a Montreal heritage building into an outdoor artwork for the summer of 2027.

Conseil des arts de Montréal
DEADLINE21 OCTOBER 2026
WORTHUp to $75,000

The biggest number on this month's list, and the one with the most specific brief. Up to $75,000 for an outdoor ephemeral work on the Édifice Gaston-Miron, the CAM's own building, facing parc La Fontaine, for June to September 2027.

Circus artists should read the small print rather than skip this one. The competition is open to every discipline, and the proposal can carry a performative component at the opening.

WHAT IT IS

CAM ran this for the first time in 2026 for its 70th anniversary, with Skawennati's Promesse, and is doing it again. The building is a former City of Montreal library at 1210 rue Sherbrooke Est in Ville-Marie, and CAM is offering its facade as a surface.

The work has to stay up for several months and be visible day and night. A projection that only reads after dark does not qualify on its own: it has to be appreciable in some form during the day too. A performative element at the inauguration is allowed and can bring in other disciplines, but it has to fit inside the same overall budget.

Two technical constraints are absolute. Interventions have to be reversible and preserve the masonry, and because of the building's heritage status no anchoring into the facades is permitted. The work also has to respect Yannick Pouliot's permanent piece Dialogue (2014).

CAM pays up to $75,000, handles promotion of the winning work and the technical direction tied to the building itself, though not the technical direction of your project. Preparation and creation run December 2026 to May 2027, installation by mid-June 2027, removal in September 2027.

WHO CAN APPLY
  • ·Individual artists: Canadian citizenship or permanent residence, living on the island of Montreal for at least a year, with at least one artistic work presented in a professional context.
  • ·Artist collectives: at least two professional artists, represented by a member who lives on the island and holds citizenship or permanent residence, two thirds of the collective citizens or permanent residents, and a majority living on the island.
  • ·Non-profit professional arts organisations with their head office on the island of Montreal. An organisation can also apply while sponsoring an individual artist.
  • ·The project has to be turnkey. You have to show you can take it on and deliver the whole thing, and every other source of funding has to be confirmed at the time you apply.
  • ·The CAM envelope can be combined with other public or private money, including sponsorship in cash or in services, with one exception: it cannot be stacked with CAM's own project grant programme.
  • ·Every discipline is eligible, including arts du cirque, street arts, dance, theatre, music, literature, visual arts, digital arts, film and video, non-disciplinary practices and the multidisciplinary sector.
HOW & WHEN TO APPLY
01
Go to the information session on 2 October
11 h 30 at the Maison du CAM, 1210 rue Sherbrooke Est. For a competition with this many building-specific constraints, an hour in the room is worth more than a week of guessing.
02
Get the plans and photos of the building
CAM publishes them, and the proposal has to be technically compatible with the building: reversible, no anchors on the facades, and clear of Dialogue. A proposal that fails on the building fails regardless of the idea.
03
Budget the whole thing, including the takedown
Professional fees, copyright, design, production and technical costs, administration, permits, engineer reports where needed, equipment purchase or rental, fabrication, installation, commissioning, maintenance of the work, and dismantling. Any performance at the opening comes out of the same envelope.
04
File on ORORA by 21 October 2026
Applications go through CAM's portal.
